Overview
The MG HS Hybrid+ (from £30,495) is a hybrid (self-charging) SUV from MG. It offers 224 hp and 0–62 mph in 7.9 s.
The HS Hybrid+ is the self-charging hybrid version of MG's family SUV and the biggest car in its Hybrid+ line-up. Priced from £30,495, it sits between the manual petrol HS and the Plug-in Hybrid, and is offered in SE and Trophy trims.
Engine, economy and charging
A 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine is paired with an electric motor, a small 1.8 kWh battery and a two-speed automatic gearbox. The battery is charged by the engine and by braking, so there's no cable involved. The system switches between EV, Hybrid and petrol modes automatically. Official economy is 51.3 mpg with 126 g/km of CO2 – a big step up on the 38 mpg petrol.
Performance and driving
With around 224 bhp, the Hybrid+ is the quickest non-plug-in HS: 0–62 mph takes 7.9 seconds and top speed is 118 mph. Auto Express found it more refined than the petrol model, and the automatic gearbox makes it more relaxed in traffic. Traffic jam assist helps on congested motorways.
Interior and space
The cabin is the same spacious design as other HS models, with generous rear legroom and a large boot – Auto Express reports the same 507 litres as the petrol. Trophy adds a panoramic sunroof, black or red leather-style and suede-style upholstery, dual-zone climate, heated and ventilated front seats and an electric driver's seat with lumbar adjustment and memory. Braked towing capacity is 1,500 kg.
Technology and safety
Dual 12.3-inch displays, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Bluetooth phone key, wireless charging and a 360-degree camera are standard. MG Pilot here includes adaptive cruise control with intelligent speed limit assist and traffic jam assist, autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind-spot detection and active rear cross-traffic alert.
Who is it for?
Drivers who want an automatic, low-running-cost family SUV but can't charge at home. It competes with the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, Nissan Qashqai e-Power and Kia Sportage Hybrid, and undercuts them significantly on price.
