Overview
The MG4 EV (from £30,495) is the top version of the MG MG4, an electric hatchback. It offers a claimed range of 338 miles, 435 hp and 0–62 mph in 3.8 s.
The MG4 EV is the electric family hatchback that made MG a serious EV player, and this facelifted version sharpens it rather than reinventing it. It sits above the cheaper MG4 EV Urban in the UK line-up, starting from £30,495, and comes as Premium Long Range, Premium Extended Range or the twin-motor XPOWER.
Battery, range and charging
The Premium Long Range uses a 64 kWh battery, while the Extended Range gets a slimmer 77 kWh NCM pack that MG rates at up to 338 miles on the WLTP cycle. On a 150 kW rapid charger the 64 kWh car goes from 10 to 80% in about 25 minutes, so a coffee stop adds plenty of motorway miles. The XPOWER shares the 64 kWh battery, trading some range for performance.
Performance and driving
Single-motor cars drive the rear wheels and keep the MG4's 50:50 weight balance, which is why the hatchback has always felt more agile than most rivals. The Long Range has 140 kW, the Extended Range 180 kW, cutting 0–62 mph to 6.2 seconds. The XPOWER adds a front motor for all-wheel drive and 435 PS, getting to 62 mph in 3.8 seconds.
Interior and space
The cabin now borrows the design and materials of the MGS5 EV and MGS6 EV, and brings back physical buttons for the climate controls. Rear passengers get proper legroom, and the boot holds 388 litres, or 1,164 litres with the seats folded. Heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and a six-way adjustable driver's seat are standard.
Technology and safety
A 12.8-inch touchscreen with built-in apps such as Spotify and YouTube sits beside a 10.25-inch driver display, and wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and phone charging are included. A 360-degree camera with a 'transparent chassis' view helps in tight spaces. The MG Pilot driver-assistance suite is standard, with a Custom function that remembers your preferred settings, and every car has six airbags.
Who is it for?
Drivers who want a roomy, well-equipped electric hatchback that is genuinely enjoyable on a twisty road, without paying premium-brand prices. It competes with the Volkswagen ID.3, BYD Dolphin and Kia EV3, and the XPOWER offers hot-hatch pace for far less than most performance EVs.
