Overview
The MG4 EV Urban (from £23,495) is the entry-level version of the MG MG4, an electric hatchback. It offers a claimed range of 258 miles.
The MG4 EV Urban is the entry point to MG's electric range: a front-wheel-drive hatchback developed for value, priced from £23,495. It shares the MG4 name but uses its own simpler set-up, and comes in three versions – Comfort Standard Range, Comfort Long Range and Premium Long Range.
Battery, range and charging
The Standard Range uses a 42.8 kWh battery and the Long Range versions a 53.9 kWh pack, which gives up to 258 miles on the WLTP cycle. A heat pump is standard on every car, which helps hold on to range in cold weather. A 10–80% rapid charge takes about 28 minutes.
Performance and driving
Power goes to the front wheels: 110 kW in the Standard Range and 118 kW in the Long Range models. There are five drive modes, including Sport, and adjustable regenerative braking that recovers energy in stop-start traffic. It is tuned for predictable, easy driving around town rather than outright pace.
Interior and space
Practicality is the Urban's party trick. The boot holds up to 577 litres, including 98 litres of underfloor storage – more than many larger family cars. The rear seats are sized for adults, and the Premium adds six-way adjustable heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and ambient lighting.
Technology and safety
Every version gets a 12.8-inch touchscreen, a 7-inch driver display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, keyless entry and physical buttons for the climate controls. The Premium Long Range adds a 360-degree camera, wireless phone charging and built-in apps. Seven airbags are standard and the car has a five-star Euro NCAP rating, backed by MG Pilot driver aids such as blind-spot detection and lane-keeping.
Who is it for?
Budget-minded buyers and families who want a big boot and a low price more than rear-wheel-drive fun. Rivals include the BYD Dolphin, Renault 5 and Citroën ë-C3; if you want more range or performance, the standard MG4 EV is the step up.
