Overview

The Jaecoo 7 SHS-H (from £29,210) is the entry-level version of the Jaecoo Jaecoo 7, a hybrid (self-charging) SUV. It offers 224 hp and 0–62 mph in 8.3 s.

The Jaecoo 7 SHS-H is the self-charging hybrid version of Jaecoo’s best-selling family SUV, and it is currently the cheapest way into a Jaecoo 7. Prices start at £29,210 for the Pure and £32,810 for the Deluxe – both undercutting the petrol model – and there is no cable to plug in.

Engine, economy and charging

Jaecoo’s Super Hybrid System pairs a fifth-generation 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine with an electric motor and a small 1.83 kWh battery, which recharges itself through braking and from the engine. Official economy is 51.8 mpg with CO2 of 125 g/km, a big improvement on the petrol 7’s 37.7 mpg. The fuel tank holds 51 litres.

Performance and driving

Combined output is 224 PS and 310 Nm, making the SHS-H the most powerful Jaecoo 7. Jaecoo quotes 0–62 mph in 8.3 seconds and a 112 mph top speed. It is front-wheel drive only. Reviewers find the hybrid smoother and quieter than the petrol car, often pulling away on electric power, though the ride stays firm and the steering light.

Interior and space

Boot space is unchanged from the petrol version at 500 litres, or 1,265 litres with the seats folded, so the hybrid hardware costs nothing in practicality. The SHS models move the gear selector to the steering column, which frees up the centre console. The entry Pure trim has fabric seats and goes without the panoramic sunroof; the Deluxe adds synthetic leather, heated front seats and the full-length roof.

Technology and safety

Every SHS-H gets the large central touchscreen with smartphone mirroring, a digital instrument display and adaptive cruise control. The Jaecoo 7 has a five-star Euro NCAP rating. Some exterior features, such as the more advanced LED headlights, are not fitted to the Pure.

Who is it for?

Drivers who want better economy than the petrol model but cannot charge at home, and anyone after a well-equipped family SUV under £30,000. Rivals include the Toyota C-HR, Kia Niro Hybrid, MG ZS Hybrid+ and Nissan Qashqai e-Power.
