Overview
The Chery Tiggo 8 (from £28,500) is the entry-level version of the Chery Tiggo 8, a petrol SUV. It offers 147 hp, 0–62 mph in 9.7 s and 7 seats.
The Tiggo 8 is Chery’s seven-seat SUV, slotting between the Tiggo 7 and the larger, more powerful Tiggo 9. This petrol version is the entry point to the range at about £28,545, making it one of the cheapest new seven-seaters in the UK. It comes in Aspire and Summit trims.
Engine and economy
Like the smaller Tiggo 7, the petrol Tiggo 8 uses a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine with 147 hp, driving the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. There is no electrical assistance, so economy will be noticeably worse than the Super Hybrid’s – a point to weigh if you do lots of short urban trips. In return, it costs about £5,000 less than the plug-in.
Performance and driving
0–62 mph takes 9.7 seconds, which is acceptable for a car this size but means it will feel stretched fully loaded. The set-up favours comfort: the ride is soft and it is quiet at a cruise, but there is plenty of body roll in faster bends and the steering has little feel.
Interior and space
At around 4.75 metres long, the Tiggo 8 offers seven seats as standard. With all three rows in use the boot shrinks to just 117 litres, rising to 494 litres with the third row folded. The cabin uses soft-touch materials and solid-feeling switchgear, and there is a large 15.6-inch central touchscreen.
Technology and safety
Aspire comes with heated seats, a cooled wireless phone charger and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Summit adds electric, heated, ventilated and massaging front seats, a panoramic roof, ambient lighting and a 12-speaker Sony system. Every version has a 540-degree camera, adaptive cruise control, traffic-jam assist and collision warning, and the Tiggo 8 has a five-star Euro NCAP rating.
Who is it for?
Families who occasionally need seven seats and want maximum equipment for the money. Rivals include the Dacia Jogger, Skoda Kodiaq and Hyundai Santa Fe, though both of the latter cost considerably more.
