About the Shark

The Shark is BYD’s double-cab pick-up and the first plug-in hybrid pick-up from a Chinese brand in the UK. It uses BYD’s DMO (Dual Mode Off-road) system and is sold in one well-equipped version from £47,295, putting it up against the Ford Ranger PHEV.

## Battery, range and charging

A 29.58 kWh Blade battery gives up to 55 miles of electric-only range on the WLTP cycle, and a combined range of 419 miles with the fuel tank full. That means many owners can complete local work runs without using petrol. The Shark can also supply power to tools and campsite equipment through vehicle-to-load.

## Performance and driving

A 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine works mainly as a generator, with electric motors on each axle giving permanent four-wheel drive and a combined output of around 435 bhp. BYD says it is the UK’s fastest-accelerating PHEV pick-up, with 0–62 mph in 5.7 seconds. The ladder-frame chassis has independent suspension front and rear for a more car-like ride.

## Interior and space

The five-seat cabin is finished in soft-touch materials, with heated and ventilated vegan leather front seats and up to 10 storage areas. Payload is up to 790 kg and towing capacity is 2,500 kg – lower than the 3,500 kg that diesel rivals offer, which matters for heavy trailers.

## Technology and safety

A 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen and 10.25-inch driver display are standard, along with 50 W wireless phone charging. The 360° camera adds a 180° underbody view to help pick a path over rough terrain, and a full suite of driver-assistance systems is fitted.

## Who is it for?

Business users and lifestyle buyers who want a pick-up with very low fuel use on short trips and strong performance. Its direct rival is the Ford Ranger PHEV; diesel alternatives include the Toyota Hilux and Isuzu D-Max, which tow more.
