Overview

The BYD Dolphin (from £30,230) is an electric hatchback from BYD. It offers a claimed range of 265 miles, 204 hp and 0–62 mph in 7 s.

The Dolphin is BYD’s family-size electric hatchback, roughly the footprint of a VW ID.3, and sits between the Dolphin Surf and the Atto 2 in the UK range. It is offered in two well-equipped trims, Comfort from £30,230 and Design from £31,730, both using the same 60.4 kWh Blade battery and single front motor.

Battery, range and charging

The 60.4 kWh LFP battery gives 265 miles on the WLTP combined cycle and around 347 miles in city driving. DC charging peaks at 110 kW, taking the battery from 10% to 80% in 36 minutes (30–80% in 26). With the standard 11 kW on-board charger, a full charge from a three-phase wallbox takes just over six hours. A heat pump helps protect range in winter.

Performance and driving

The 150 kW (204 PS) motor delivers 310 Nm to the front wheels, enough for 0–62 mph in 7.0 seconds and a 99 mph top speed. That is brisk for a family hatch, and the 1,658 kg kerb weight is reasonable for the battery size. The ride is set up for comfort rather than sharp handling.

Interior and space

At 4,290 mm long with a 2,700 mm wheelbase, the Dolphin has a flat rear floor and generous legroom for the class. BYD quotes 364 litres of boot space, rising to 1,329 litres with the 60:40 seats folded. The cabin uses vegan leather sports seats and a floating centre console; Design adds a panoramic glass roof and heated, ventilated front seats.

Technology and safety

A large rotating touchscreen runs navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with 4G connectivity, “Hi BYD” voice control and over-the-air updates. NFC card or phone keys and Vehicle-to-Load (3.3 kW) are standard. The Dolphin scored the full five stars in Euro NCAP tests, and driver aids include adaptive cruise control, lane-departure assist and door-opening warning.

Who is it for?

Buyers who want a roomy, well-equipped electric hatchback without paying premium prices. It competes with the MG4 EV, VW ID.3 and Renault Mégane E-Tech; the MG4 drives more sharply, but the Dolphin counters with a richer standard specification.
