Overview

The Omoda 5 SHS-H (from £25,755) is a hybrid (self-charging) SUV from Omoda. It offers 224 hp and 0–62 mph in 7.9 s.

The Omoda 5 SHS-H was Omoda's first self-charging full hybrid in the UK. It uses the same coupé-crossover body as the petrol car, but with a much more efficient powertrain. It is the fastest Omoda 5 apart from the E5. It comes in Knight (£25,755) and Noble (£29,255) trims, which is less than £2,000 more than the equivalent petrol models.

Engine, economy and charging

The SHS (Super Hybrid System) pairs a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine with an electric motor and a small 1.83 kWh battery. It drives the front wheels through a single-speed dedicated hybrid transmission. The battery recharges as you drive, so the car never needs plugging in. Official economy is 52.2 mpg with CO2 of 120 g/km, compared with 168 g/km for the petrol car. Auto Express averaged 44.3 mpg in mixed driving. Omoda claims a total range of over 650 miles from the 51-litre tank.

Performance and driving

Combined output is 224 PS and 295 Nm, which takes the SHS-H from 0 to 62 mph in 7.9 seconds, more than two seconds quicker than the petrol car. Top speed is 108 mph. Reviewers say it is more refined than the petrol model, although the engine gets noisy under hard acceleration. Drive modes are Eco and Sport. It can tow 750 kg.

Interior and space

The hybrid is slightly longer than the petrol car at 4,447 mm. The boot holds 370 litres because of the hybrid hardware. Knight models have heated synthetic leather front seats and 18-inch alloys. Noble models add ventilated seats, a heated wheel, a sunroof and 19-inch wheels. Tall drivers may find headroom tight with the Noble's sunroof.

Technology and safety

Twin 12.3-inch curved displays, wireless smartphone mirroring and a cooled 50 W phone charger are standard. The Noble adds Sony audio and a 540-degree camera. The safety equipment matches the rest of the range, including AEB, adaptive cruise, lane keeping and eight airbags.

Who is it for?

The SHS-H suits drivers who cover too many miles for the petrol car to make sense but who cannot charge at home. Its rivals include the MG ZS Hybrid+, Toyota Yaris Cross and Dacia Duster Hybrid. The Chery Tiggo 4 uses a similar hybrid system for less money.
